| Minntac Career Development Program serves represented employees (Union members) at US Steels Minnesota Ore Operations site. Potential participants include about 1000 hourly employees represented by USWA Local #1938 and Local #9115. The total number of employees who have participated in the Program since 1992 is 1710, which represents a very high participation rate. Career Development funds can be used in two ways by participants. Participants may enroll in customized courses offered at our site. These courses are advertised through our brochures and by weekly postings sent to the work sites. Participants may also enroll for courses of individual interested offered through approved educational providers (such as colleges), utilizing their $1800-per-calendar-year Tuition Assistance benefit. Tuition Assistance funds will pay for tuition and required texts, though not for college fees. Were proud to be the first mining site among the 53 Career Development Program sites around the country, and we are the first such program in the state of Minnesota. Other Iron Range Career Development Programs are located at Keewatin Taconite and Arcelor-Mittal Steel. Minntacs Career Development program is managed by the Local Joint Committee, which includes Cherie Averill-Manner, USWA #9115; Maureen Sadar, US Steel; Chad Daniels, USWA #1938; and Bruce Bjerke, USWA #1938. Career Development staff includes Mary Karakash, Program Coordinator, Joe Kotnik, Woodworking Shop supervisor, DuWayne Peterson, Auto/Metal Shop supervisor, Al Waldorf, Saturday shop supervisor and Richard Alto, computer tech and tutor. First housed at Minntac's Learning Center, the Career Development Center has been located on Main Street in downtown Mt. Iron, MN since 1996. You can contact us by mailing PO Box 286, Mt.
